Meeting about a proposed restricted fishing area off Port Hueneme

A new area may be closed to lobster fishing.
Please attend a meeting 1/10/17 to voice opposition.

If you look at the pictorial representation – there is no way these ships will venture anywhere near the expanded safety zone – the water isn't deep enough for the larger ships…

See announcement below.

To All Members of the Public:

The California Fish and Game Commission (Commission) will be considering a regulation change to designate the marine safety fairway off Port Hueneme (NOAA chart 18724) as a restricted fishing area for the take of lobster for commercial purposes.

Click here to see two maps of the proposed designated area.

A public outreach meeting will be held on January 10, 2017 at 10 a.m. at the Port of Hueneme District Office, located at 105 E. Port Hueneme Road, Port Hueneme, Calif. The meeting will provide members of the public an opportunity to discuss and comment on the proposed regulation change.

More Background from Tom Mason:

The Port of Hueneme (Port) will be hosting an outreach meeting on January 10, 2017 to discuss a proposal to establish a commercial lobster restricted fishing area off Port Hueneme to enhance vessel safety.  We would like to request your help with reaching out to commercial fishermen in your area and other interested parties concerning this upcoming meeting. Details concerning the proposal as well as time and location of the meeting and contact information for questions are provided in the attached flyer.
The Port submitted a petition to the Fish and Game Commission in January 2016, requesting that they consider a regulatory change to designate an area off Port Hueneme as a commercial lobster restricted fishing area to enhance vessel safety.  The proposed designation would prohibit the deployment of commercial lobster gear within the safety fairway of the port (Figures 1 and 2 of the attached) to provide safe passage for vessels entering and leaving the Port.
CDFW anticipates that the Fish and Game Commission will consider publicly noticing its intent to consider this regulatory change at its February 2017 meeting.  If noticed in February, the discussion hearing will likely be scheduled for the April 2017 Commission meeting, with possible adoption at either the April 2017 or the June 2017 Commission meeting.

As a venerable fisherman within the lobster fleet, we hope that you can help spread this information to the fleet.  We understand that the outreach meeting will be occurring during the lobster fishing season, but we would like to encourage all interested fishermen to attend this information meeting to discuss the proposal in advance of the Commission meeting.

Please let me know if you need any further information or clarification.
Thank you
